Definitions

letter: The entity referred to as "a feathertip" in the app.

letter content: The data in a letter considered to be user-generated. This includes the photos taken of the letter, the attachments added, and other metadata such as the letter's name.

password: The entity referred to as "passphrase" in the app. This is a randomly generated phrase.

Data usage

No data you provide to Feathertip is ever used for any purpose other than transmitting data to letter recipients. We will never make your data available to third parties.

Authentication and encryption

Letter data access is mediated by passwords (referred to as "passphrases" in the app). To get access to the content of a letter, a user must have access to both (a) the letter's short link (e.g. feathertip.ink/abc123), and (b) the letter's password. The letter's password is not stored in plaintext anywhere in feathertip systems.

The letter's content is encrypted using AES before being uploaded to our servers. The encryption key is derived from the password. This means that no one, not even Earnest Bits LLC, can read the letter content without access to the plaintext password.
